,

Christmas is a joyful time of year. As soon as December comes round, the unmistakeable Christmas feeling hits.

But maybe you aren’t feeling quite as Christmassy as you would like at this time of year. Well, if that’s the case, the good news is that you can kick-start the holiday vibes with some fun festive activities that will get the whole family in the mood for December 25th.

So here are Magikbee’s favourite festive activities!

  1. Get decorating! 🎄

If you aren’t feeling Christmassy yet, this is definitely the best way to get in the mood.

fun festive activities

Is there anything cosier than a Christmas tree?

Decorating the house is sure to boost the Christmas spirits of the whole family. It’s fun and creative – particularly if you and the kids hand-make some of your own decorations. Check out this recipe for quick and easy ornament dough.

A Christmas tree is a great place to start the decorations. We recommend a real pine, if possible. They make your home smell great!

So head down to your local market and buy a tree!

  1. Write letters to Santa

At the age and stage that kids believe in Santa Claus, they are still learning to read and write well. So this is a great exercise for training those crucial skills!

Of course, don’t tell them that’s your motivation. 😉

But encourage them to get creative by writing their wish list to Santa. It will get them excited for Christmas Day and help you out on with your shopping, too!

Letter to santa

Your kids will probably be a little more creative than this!

  1. Go shopping

Speaking of shopping…

An essential part of Christmas is giving your loved one gifts.

Admittedly, shopping can sometimes be a bit stressful – particularly if left to the last minute (which, let’s face it, we all do!).

But if you plan ahead and leave plenty of time to hit the shops, you can enjoy yourself and soak up the atmosphere while you make some purchases. Perhaps enjoy a mulled wine while you’re out?

  1. Make (non-alcoholic) mulled wine

Alternatively, make your own – and with the kids!

Mulled wine

Mulled wine is so delicious.

Traditional mulled wine is delicious, but not kid-friendly, obviously. Luckily, you can make an alcohol-free, fruit juice version at home that tastes just as good! It will warm you up on those cold winter nights. Get the kids involved in the simple but fun and satisfying spicing process.

Recipe here.

  1. Volunteer

Christmas is a time for giving to your family and friends. But it doesn’t have to stop there.

The festive season also offers a great opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Christmas can be an especially difficult time for vulnerable people.

It’s always worth checking with local charities if they have volunteer work open. Some may even have things that older kids can do, too.

Helping those in need is really what Christmas is all about – whether you are religious or not!

So there you have it – five fun festive activities for the whole family to enjoy this year. Merry Christmas!

The Importance of Mindfulness for Preschool Parents

You have probably heard of mindfulness by now, but are you aware of the benefits of mindfulness for preschool parents?

Though an old concept, dating back thousands of years to ancient Buddhist practices, there has been a huge rise in interest in mindfulness in the press and popular culture in recent years.

Mindfulness for preschool parents, meditation

Mindfulness is often confused with meditation. The practices are related, but not the same.

Mindfulness can help people of all walks of life, including parents. Let’s look at how.

So what is mindfulness?

Mindfulness, according to the American Psychological Association, is

“…a moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience without judgment. In this sense, mindfulness is a state and not a trait. While it might be promoted by certain practices or activities, such as meditation, it is not equivalent to or synonymous with them.”

Mindfulness has been shown to help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while helping to encourage positive emotions and improve quality of life.

These benefits are relevant to parenting, too.

Mindfulness and parenting

The fact that mindfulness reduces stress, anxiety, and depression is a good enough reason for it to benefit parenting. Stress and depression are strongly linked to negative parenting, while children whose parents have mood or anxiety disorders are more likely to suffer from them themselves.

But that’s not all. The practices of mindfulness, such as acting with awareness, observing, and non-judging of inner experiences, each have their benefits to the way you interact with your child.

Acting with awareness, meaning being fully attentive and conscious of the experiences in the present moment, is essential to good parenting. That’s because if you are truly present in the moment when interacting with your child, you can better emotionally connect with them and respond more effectively to their needs.

Observing, meanwhile, allows you to recognise your own thoughts and feelings, improving emotional intelligence and enabling you to empathise as a parent.

Non-judging is the acceptance of thoughts and feelings and teaches parents acceptance of their mistakes and their child as a human being.

Mindfulness at the Preschool stage

Mindfulness in parenting benefits children of all ages, but is particularly relevant during the preschool stage.

tantrum

Dealing with tantrums requires patience and understand.

At this stage, frustration and displeasure in children often lead to bursts of emotion in the shape of temper tantrums – as preschool parents are all too aware! And as kids learn to socialise, they must learn that they cannot get what they want all of the time.

Mindfulness can help parents deal with these conflicts by reducing their stress, allowing them to respond more calmly to tantrums, and by being a better example to children of how to manage emotions.

Slowing things down

Sometimes, with the day-to-day management of running a family, parents just feel too busy to be fully attentive to their kids’ needs. That’s a problem.

Being a mindful parent often means slowing things down. Take a breath, and listen to what your child is trying to tell you through their behaviour! This is particularly important for parents of children with behavioural issues.

Mother mindfulness

Be in the moment.

Meanwhile, stress can be detrimental to family life. As well as impacting relationships between parents, children pick up on stress; they notice it and they feel it. And in fact, studies show that parental stress is a larger source of stress in kids than schoolwork or peer pressure.

Mindfulness can help mums and dads manage their stress, benefiting the whole family.  For more great tips on mindfulness techniques that you can use right away, check out this article from the INLP centre.

Top 5 Healthy and Easy Breakfast Ideas for the Kids

Feeding the kids a healthy and easy breakfast can seem like an impossible task, – especially when you are under pressure to get to school, go to work, or start the day’s chores.

You also want to make sure they are eating the right stuff! It’s all too easy to reach for sugar-filled cereals when you are in a rush…

Can breakfast be stress-free and healthy?

Absolutely!

Here we’ve picked 5 healthy and easy breakfast ideas so that you and the kids have a fast – and nutritious – start to the day! Let’s go!

  1. Egg-in-a-hole

Egg in a hole recipe

Simple, and delicious. Source: Food Network

You may not know it yet, but this is a classic breakfast. When I was young, my dad would make these – he called them “Guy Gibby eggs”… don’t ask why – I honestly have no idea!

Egg-in-a-hole is simple: cut a circle in a slice of bread – wholemeal, to keep it healthy – and fry it with an egg placed in the hole.

You can use butter or olive oil – butter will taste yummier but olive oil keeps the recipe on the healthier side.

This is a super easy and fun recipe. The novelty factor of an egg within the slice of toast – and the satisfaction of popping the yolk – will delight the kids.

  1. Green Monster Smoothie

Speaking of fun recipes… this one is great! And you’ll sneak in some green veggies without anybody noticing – promise!

This is a smoothie made from frozen bananas, milk, spinach, and orange juice. There is no added sugar needed thanks to the fruit.

Whizzing it all up in the blender is a matter of seconds.

Dress up the cup to make it look like a monster for the fun factor – particular as Halloween is coming up! ?

Using very ripe, frozen bananas is key for a sweet taste and smooth texture. Your little ones won’t even know the spinach is in there.

A great brekkie but also a fun snack for any time of day.

  1. Oatmeal

Porridge / oatmeal healthy breakfast

You may want to keep it simple for the kids, but you can spice up oatmeal for a delicious breakfast for yourself.

Not the most original recipe, but one of the greats! Use whole oats (rather than instant or quick oats) for a super healthy breakfast.

Oatmeal is packed with fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants and is a great source of fuel to last the whole morning. Don’t forget that they are also gluten-free!

Add fruit, nuts, and a dash of honey (or any other bits and bobs that your kids like) to make things more interesting.

Overall, oatmeal is a breakfast superstar.

Who doesn’t love a muffin?

Sadly, they normally aren’t the healthiest as they are loaded with sugar.

Happily, you can make them yourself at home. The result is a super tasty, super fast breakfast option for the kids.

They are simple to make, containing just applesauce, maple syrup, eggs, wholewheat flour, oil, and, of course, bananas! The riper, the better.

Our 5 Essential Tips for Keeping Your Kids Safe Online

Every parent’s priority is to ensure their kids are safe wherever they go – and that includes keeping your kids safe online. This can seem like a daunting task.

But it is an essential challenge to manage, with 25% of kids aged six and under and 95% of teens owning a mobile device!

As we all know, the internet can be a dangerous place and with such wide access, it is the parents’ job to assure that kids are protected.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to increase your children’s safety online. Here go our top 5 tips for keeping your kids safe online!

  1. Start discussing safety online as early as possible

As soon as your children encounter the internet – which at first should be via a parent’s device and, of course, supervised – begin the conversation about safety online.

Kids using tablet kiddZtube

Make sure you supervise your toddlers when they use your devices!

You can explain the need to be careful when using devices connected to the internet, in the same way that you teach children to be careful when crossing roads in real life.

Start with simple safety concepts – like not talking to strangers, just like in real life –  and you can move on through the trickier stuff as they get older.

  1.  Keep the conversation open and understand what your kids are doing – and why!

Once your kids are using devices more independently, be sure to sit down with them frequently to discuss safety. Crucially, listen to them!

You should allow them to explain to you what they are doing, so you can understand their point of view and their motives. Articulating what they are up to will also help kids consider their actions online more carefully.

Get involved while your kids use their favorite apps!

Entering their world will enable you to handle any risky behaviour in a non-confrontational and constructive way – which leads neatly on to the next tip.

  1. Don’t ban your kids from doing things you don’t like

Banning things that you are not comfortable with is not always the best solution. Indeed, it can often make it even more tempting for a child to explore the forbidden fruit!

Instead, you must make your son or daughter understand why a certain behaviour or website makes you uncomfortable.

In this way, you build a relationship on trust rather than fear. Make sure they know that when they are old enough, they will be able to use the internet as they please, but that as a parent, it’s your role to make sure they are safe.

  1. Know which apps your kids use – and choose wisely

As noted in Tip 2, it is essential to listen to your kids and learn from them how they are using their devices and the internet.

You and your child can decide together on which apps they have access to. Of course, your job as the responsible parent is to make sure these decisions are wise.

This can be challenging, as kids will naturally want to use certain apps – social media, for example – before they are ready to do so. Again, your trust-based relationship on the topic of the internet and devices is crucial.

Fortunately, there are lots of safe apps for all sorts of things and for all age groups. We at Magikbee built our own – kiddZtube, the safe preschool video app. That would be a great option for a child who loves watching videos.

  1. Spend time together offline!

It might sound obvious, but it is still a crucial bit of advice: spend time offline with your kids. Play board games, go to the park, or bake cakes together. There are thousands of 100% offline activities that you can enjoy with your children.

These activities are good for your kids – and good for you! Even light exercise, like a gentle bike ride, is great for your health.

family outside

Explore the great outdoors!

Meanwhile, teaching your child to enjoy real-life activities from an early age will help them understand the need for balance between time spent across the online and offline worlds. And they’ll also discover wholesome, healthy hobbies to enjoy for their whole lives!

There you have it! Our top five tips for keeping your kids safe online. Stay safe guys!

Our Approach to Online Safety

At Magikbee, kids’ online safety is our priority. We’re a group of parents, so we understand the dangers that kids face on the internet.

A few years ago, we became really concerned with the type of videos that kids were coming across on popular platforms. That’s why we created kiddZtube, our safe and educational video app for preschoolers, where all of the content is handpicked by real teachers. This means the app is 100% safe.

kiddZtube, our popular preschool app.

The human touch of our group of teachers has helped kiddZtube become one of the top preschool apps worldwide.

Now, we want to further improve the app by actively involving you, the parents, in our ambitions.

Introducing kiddZtube Community

So today, we are delighted to announce the launch of the kiddZtube Community – where parents can share video suggestions for the app, recommend safe YouTube channels, and share tips about keeping their kids safe online more generally.

We will review every suggestion that you make, and if our teachers believe it is a good fit for kiddZtube, we’ll upload it!

We think this initiative will provide real value for you, the parents, and your children. Imagine, for example, that you know of a particular YouTube channel that your kid loves – but you’re concerned about giving her free reign on that platform. That’s where the kiddZtube Community comes in.

Just head over to the forum, share the link to the channel, and we’ll review as soon as we can. If our educators believe it is appropriate for the app, and decide to upload your suggestion, we’ll be sure to let you know!
